Description

1. José María Velasco, one of the best Mexican landscape artists. His paintings of the Mexico Valley are still used on the elementary text books. I still do landscapes for my stories.
2. Teotihuacan murals. I like the chromatic key of greens, whites and reds. Partially used for some characters colored for convenience.
3. Shaman King, by Hiroyuki Takei and the staff of XEBEC. My first attempt to develop full-human characters was inspired by these. Some of them are still in use. And some twin tropes.
4. Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Deep-plot stories, an ecologist message, the love for traditional art, and a star system are one of my most aimed goals.
5. José Guadalupe Posada, engraver. His most acclaimed works are living skulls.
6. Jules Verne. Science focused stories that introduced me to the sweet love for details.
7. Traditional blankets of Oaxaca. Full of color, mysterious significance. And probably a source of plots.
8. Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente. Naturalist. Although his books are scientific, he had a great literally style. Just to show that accuracy is not in conflict with beauty.
9. Digimon, by Akiyoshi Hongo and TOEI animation. Most of my current characters once were digimons. Anemon’s name is the biggest proof.
10. Gabriel García Márquez, and writers of Magic Realism. Magic blended with everyday’s life is one of the best things in literature. To be fair, Juan Rulfo has an honorary mention.
11. CLAMP. They had both a heavy visual and etymological influence on my character’s design. Just compare Yuuko, Sakura and Chii with Yocotzin, Callicuetzpallin and Kiwichat. I also love her love stories with a darker tone.
12. Nuttal codex. Mixtec. These codes are real stories related in an elegant way. Sometimes used.
13. Hatsune Miku and the Vocaloids. They provide new stories with any song. I should admit they are a recent addition, but very influent.
14. Avatar, the Last Airbender, by Michael Dante DiMartino y Bryan Konietzko. Bending could fit perfectly in my stories, aside from the clean animesque style.
15. Frida Kahlo. Pain, tradition, the innermost feelings. And love for self-portraits.
16. Carlos Monsiváis (drawn by El Fisgón). He was ironic, funny and critic. I wish I could add something of them in my works.
17. Ukiyo e, represented by Kanagawa oki nami ura by Katsushika Hokusai. I like that style, even if I have not used it recently.
18. El Fisgón (drawn by Hernández) one of my favorite cartoonists.
19. Rius. I think he is the master of all the recent Mexican “moneros”. His drawings are poor, but the stories are very critic.
